Why is reading important?

At Khalsa Secondary Academy we believe strongly that reading is the foundation of a child’s ability to learn and prosper academically, and ultimately, their ability to function properly in an ever-changing society. In order to thrive in all areas of the curriculum at KSA, a child will need to possess strong reading skills to make it through school and into their career.

KSA is committed to creating students who are confident and secure in their grasp of the English language, and we believe reading helps create students who are articulate and able to express themselves confidently in their spoken and written language.

At KSA we believe firmly that reading matters because:

  1. It expands their vocabulary and improves their grammar, making them better at articulating themselves verbally and in their writing.
  2. It helps build independence and self-confidence, making students more resilient learners.
  3. It leads to their future academic success in all subjects. Reading enables pupils both to acquire knowledge and to build on what they already know.
  4. It enhances their imagination. Through reading, pupils have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually.
  5. It entertains them.

Since reading accurately and with confidence is so essential to a child’s progress, it is essential to teach children the value of reading as soon as they start at KSA so they do it as often as possible, they value their ability to do so, and they hopefully become lifelong readers for pleasure.

How is reading developed at KSA?

Reading is a key component of all subjects at KSA and is encouraged by all teachers across all areas of the school curriculum.

All students arriving at KSA will follow the Accelerating Reading programme, which we believe actively encourages rapid progress in literacy and confidence in reading for pleasure. All students arriving in Year 7 will be tested for Reading Ages in the first half-term of their time at the school and there will an opportunity to listen to every child read aloud in the first month. The English department look at reading ages and CATS scores with the SENCO and Data Manager to identify pupils quickly who need extra intervention to improve their literacy levels at the earliest stage of their secondary schooling. 

In lessons and through our Accelerated Reading Programme, pupils are taught to develop an appreciation and love of reading, reading increasingly challenging material independently through access to a wide range of fiction and non-fiction, short stories, poems and plays with a wide coverage of genres, historical periods, forms and authors.

It is expected that KSA readers will read regularly, fluently and with confidence, and developed a life-long interest in reading. It is also expected through reading that students will be effective in learning new vocabulary, relating it explicitly to known vocabulary and understanding it with the help of context and in-class dictionaries, making inferences and referring to evidence in the text, and knowing the purpose, audience for and context of the writing and drawing on this knowledge to support comprehension.

Students are also encouraged to read during their tutor time and are supported by a well-resourced library which all students visit each fortnight for their Accelerated Reading lessons. As a result, students are able to:

  1. read easily, fluently and with good understanding.
  2. develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information.
  3. develop a wide vocabulary.
  4. write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style as demanded by the purpose, audience and format of their text.
  5. be skilled and effective in the arts of speaking and listening.
  6. appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage.  

 Reading is also promoted at KSA through a wide range of enrichment and intervention activities.  These include activities such as:

  • Reading clubs
  • Challenge Lists for the able reader
  • Poetry and writing competitions
  • Visiting authors and poets
  • National Poetry Day events in October
  • World Book Day events in March
  • Scholastic Book Fairs twice a year
